Assalamu Alaykum,
Today’s gem is from Islamic Manners: The Book of Etiquettes from Sunan Abi Dawood. In this gem, Shaykh Daood Butt explains that The Prophet ﷺ showed patience with children, guiding us to be gentle, fair, and trustworthy role models.
Hope you enjoy!
We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
The first friends a child should have are their parents or guardians. As parents, it’s important for us to build a strong, trusting relationship with our children—especially as they enter their teenage years. While we remain in a position of authority, we must begin to shift toward being approachable, supportive friends in their lives.
The Prophet ﷺ never asked Anas (R.A) why he did or didn’t do something. That doesn’t mean we should never question our children, but it speaks to the trust and understanding between them. Anas (R.A) was trustworthy, and when children are trustworthy, parents can rely on the fact that even if things aren’t done right away or in a certain way, they will eventually be done sincerely.
It’s essential that we treat our children equally. We should never show favoritism, as it can create long-term resentment. This principle will be reinforced in the next hadith, inshaAllah.
May Allah ﷻ help us to be just and kind with our children, and grant us the patience and wisdom of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in all our dealings.
أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
