Assalamu Alaykum,
Today’s gem is from Shaykh Abdullah Waheed’s course, From Taif to Makah. In this gem, Shaykh Abdullah Waheed explains the importance of avoiding cursing and harming others, highlighting the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ merciful nature even in the face of severe harm. It warns against abusing others, as the dua (prayer) of the oppressed is powerful and can lead to one’s destruction, urging both restraint in language and compassion in behavior.
Hope you enjoy!
We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
We should be very careful. We should not promote cursing.
Prophet ﷺ by nature was rahmah (merciful). When in Uhud they said when they saw the Prophet ﷺ bleeding, tooth loss, heads gushing with blood, and they say, “Ya Rasulullah, perfect opportunity, just curse them, angels will come, strike them with a lightning bolt.”
The Prophet ﷺ turns to the people, the Sahaba and says that I was not sent to curse people, I was sent as a rahmah. My people don’t know, Allah ﷻ guide them.
Then what happens?
The top generals become Muslim. Khalid bin Walid (R), Amr bin Aas (R), Ikramah (R), Suhail bin Amr (R) all these people. They don’t just become Muslims, they go on to conquer Qadisiyah and Yarmouk. Khalid bin Walid was in the battle with Sa’d ibn Waqqas for the Persian emperor and the Roman emperor.
How are you gonna curse someone whose future is going to be a victor for Muslims? So you have to be very careful how you use your tongue in cursing people. May Allah ﷻ protect us from the curse of people who are oppressed.
Prophet ﷺ said to Mu'adh ibn Jabal when he sent him to Yemen, “Be aware of the dua of someone that’s oppressed. Once an oppressed person makes dua, you’re dead there’s no veil you’re going to be destroyed.” So if anybody is in a relationship and the person you are abusing raises their hands and makes dua against you, it can ruin your life.
So we have to be very careful to stay away from any opportunities of hurting someone. And someone who’s being abused should be very calculated in how they use their language and make dua against someone.
May Allah ﷻ protect us from injustice, guide our tongues to mercy, and keep us safe from the duʿa of the oppressed.
أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
