Assalamu Alaykum,

Today’s gem is from Shaykh Navaid Aziz’s course The Gates of Mercy. In this gem, Shaykh Navaid Aziz explains public dhikr includes speaking of Allah’s ﷻ blessings and reminding others of His favors, while private dhikr focuses on personal adhkar. The companions like Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari and Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (R.A) emphasized sincerity in how we remember Allah.

Hope you enjoy!

We begin in the Name of Allah , the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad

One form of public dhikr is to proclaim the blessings and favors of Allah, as mentioned in the verse: "And proclaim the blessings of your Lord." Reminding others about Allah’s ﷻ mercy and generosity is a powerful communal act of remembrance.

Private dhikr, on the other hand, includes personal acts like the morning and evening adhkar and unrestricted remembrance such as SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, and La ilaha illallah.

The companions of the Prophet ﷺ, such as Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari and Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (R.A), were deeply cautious about group dhikr practices. As narrated in Sunan ad-Darimi, Ibn Mas’ud (R.A) once encountered people in the masjid performing coordinated dhikr by throwing pebbles in unison—a practice he questioned, reminding us that remembrance must align with prophetic guidance and sincerity.

May Allah ﷻ allow us to remember You in both solitude and gatherings, and grant us sincerity and humility in every form of dhikr.

أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
