Assalamu Alaykum,
Today’s gem is from Mufti Abdul Rehman Waheed’s course: A Clear Victory: Tafsir of Surah Al-Fath. In this gem, Mufti Abdul Rehman Waheed explains that Islam, with its complete set of teachings, is the greatest blessing. Every command is a form of mercy, leading to peace in this world and the next.
Hope you enjoy!
We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Each commandment from Allah ﷻ is a ni‘mah (blessing), and Islam as a whole is the greatest ni‘mah. As the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Alḥamdulillāh for the blessing of Islam—there is no blessing greater than it."
Shaykh Abdullah beautifully pointed out that without Islam, īmān, and yaqīn in Allah’s promises, how could someone endure the pain of losing a loved one? Islam teaches us what lies ahead, how we'll reunite with our loved ones in the hereafter. That certainty transforms grief into peace.
The Qur’anic verse —
"Today I have completed for you your religion and perfected My blessing upon you and have chosen Islam as your religion"
— marks the completion (itmam) of this perfect system. The entire package of guidance, mercy, and laws had now been revealed.
As Umar ibn Al-Khaṭṭāb (R.A) said, this verse was revealed on a day of Eid. Why? Because Allah ﷻ had now perfected Islam and gifted it entirely—its commands, its sunnah, its prohibitions—all of it is ni‘mah.
When you see the phrase “wa yutimmu ni‘matahu”, remember: the ni‘mah refers to the full gift of Allah’s commands, His dīn, and the prophetic guidance.
May Allah ﷻ grant us gratitude for the blessing of Islam, and allow us to live by its commands with love and obedience. Ameen.
